Abstract

The work is dedicated to studying whether the state (economic situation) would lead individuals to open companies during extreme events, even if they do not have an entrepreneurial profile. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Brazil recorded the largest number of entrepreneurs in its history. This study investigates whether the entrepreneurial vocation or loss of income was the main motivation. The results of using the econometric Propensity Score Matching technique on businesses in a municipality in southern Brazil support the hypothesis that entrepreneurship is independent of the state.
